LeTaco

As an upper respiratory illness consumed me and ruined my chances for the State CX Champs this week I thought, “why not make a run for the border?” Feed a fever, starve a cold. Or is it the other way round? I can never remember. Anyway, while eating my Grilled Stuffed Burrito I had to think about Greg LeMond. I am re-reading Sam Abt’s 1990 book on him – LeMond:The Incredible Comeback of an American Hero. It chronicles his rise in the sport from the Intermediate age, then as a Senior-beating Junior and on to his turning pro at an incredibly young 19 to signing the big 3-year, 1 million dollar deal with La Vie Claire. At the time, Hinault was making only $200,000 annually. Greg was heavily criticized for being greedy, and too concerned about money. Last night’s session took me through the hunting accident in the summer of 1987 when LeMond, recuperating from a broken wrist sustained in a crash during an Italian race, was shot a close range whilst (nod to the Brits) turkey hunting with his Uncle and Brother-in-Law. I knew that he still carries two pellets from the accident to this day, but I didn’t realize that he was blasted with over sixty pellets of buckshot! The Euros actually criticized him for going hunting and, in so many words, said he deserved it. Anyway, back to Taco Bell. Remember his sponsorship with them? No? Well watch this. Oh la, la. I wonder what the French had to say about this.
