In cycling small things can make a big difference. A saddle sore can start out small but develop into a big problem. It is said that Laurent Fignon lost the 1989 Tour de France because of a saddle sore. He couldn’t comfortably sit on his TT bike’s saddle and lost 58 seconds on the final stage to eventual winner Greg Lemond.

I almost always use chamois creme. I’ve used a few different kinds over the years, from homemade stuff to the (overly) expensive swiss concoction in the little jars. Enzo’s Cycling Products entered the market this summer with its ButtonHole chamois creme. It’s not too greasy, wipes easily off the hands after application, lasts for 4+ hours or riding, and produces a nice tingly sensation. I finally identified what the smell reminded me of too – York Peppermint Patties.
The company, based in Lake Zurich, Illinois, says the cream acts as a proactive barrier against saddle sores and can help cure existing ones. Further, they claim it contains high quality, non-harmful ingredients. After a week of testing it gets the “two cheeks” rating from me.
