Are you a winner?

Posted on 28 August 2009 by john

That all depends. Do you consider a victory won by sacrificing other aspects of your life a victory? Technically this guy is the winner. He crosses the line first… bike too, however, notice the loss of skin to the left cheekbone, the horrible scraping noise from the $5k rig. When I was a wee Junior lad with dreams of being a bike racer, well mostly I was dreaming of how to get girls and the mysteries of the brassiere but I digress, anyhow – when I was a sprout I was lucky enough to be selected to go and live at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and receive instruction on all things bicycle racing from newly installed head coach Eddy Borysewicz. He was Polish, spoke in heavily accented english, drove a le Car, and had an awesome mustache. Our curriculum included weight training, pack riding, cyclocross in the snow, why horse meat is the best source of protein, how to keep your twig and berries clean, and tumbling. 250px-renault5tlWe spent hours in the gym diving headfirst over a pommel horse, hitting the mat on the other side, tucking your head and leading shoulder into your chest, rolling, standing up. Tuck and roll, tuck and roll, tuck and roll. I have used this manoeuvre many times since. Sometimes whilst stumbling back from the pub, but mostly on (or off as it were) the bike. So Mr. Wednesday night face planter, next time your pull a foot out remember to tuck and roll.
