Am I too uncool? Too old? Too Roadie? How can I be intrigued and frightened all at the same time? I have tattoos (3 to be precise). My ears were once pierced but have long since grown shut. I do have appropriately fashionable footwear, jeans, and ironic t-shirts. I just think that I am not something enough to do it. If you think you’ve got the gear inches in your rolled up girlfriend-borrowed pants check out them out this weekend.
While it is hard to deny the beauty of sitting on the trainer being entertained by a screen displaying your output (who does not love that?), the latest theatrical release or bike race; I chose a different route, which is probably why I am the slow John. After that 4 hour podcast I needed some some time away – only to wonder how those mountains would be when the snow was gone and the temperatures a bit higher.
Unfortunately at the moment, for a good bit of the USA moderate temps are a pipe dream forcing those wanting to beat up on others in their spring campaigns to emulate the first photo. (Well, maybe not exactly like the first photo, in the sterile room with a mobile workstation). But at least there is a new podcast! In this back to basics installment the Two Johns talk International: Moncoutie ready to rumble, Rock ready to crumble? Local: snowboarding does not help cycling & we both get ready for this weekend’s cross race- one above board, the other on the down low, Interview with FLUID’s founder David Brown to discuss one listener’s question about post ride recovery drinks & Listener Feedback: Alva gives us the run down of champions’ heights and crank length choice & asks a question we probably did not talk about enough- why a clean Armstrong doesn’t mention anything about beating a dirty Jan? The ethics of a cycling gigolo & much much more.
Click here for more information about FLUID or google ‘live fluid’ and you will find them. They are offering a 20% discount to our listeners when they use the secret code of ‘tjpc’ when placing the order.
As I rode alone yesterday in sub-zero temps (I know, I know plenty of people train in the cold, I am not alone) I searched for motivation. I kept hoping it would come. I certainly wasn’t motivated to go. My legs felt heavy, it was spritzing snow, I was alone. I guess beer, or Papa, is as good a motivation as any.
The Two Johns are back for 2009 with this sprawling epic of a podcast. This installment is like one of those Saturday or Sunday rides where you call a chum to go on a training ride, they say ‘sure, but I told so & so we would swing to pick up a few others’. After you have gone to so & so’s house, make a stop at their friend’s, followed by the coffee shop meeting point & 2 hours after departing you are now ready to start the ride proper…At about the same length as that ride, this expansive, epic, sprawling, podcast makes its first stop- greetings & salutations, New Year’s talk, next stop- the Two Johns go detective Goran to demonstrate that 6 degrees of separation is likely on the high side when it comes to the cycling community as we question a suspected race facer from John G’s past. Unfortunately, the suspected perp flees mid interrogation. From there, we move to international(?): B. Cook v. Rock- here to stay? Next on the journey- John K talks about how not to prepare for a cross race, followed by an interview with OUCH’s John Murphy. The steady state portion of the ride starts where we hit more emails than ever & even go quasi interactive as John G reads Desert Dog’s email followed by Dog’s Twitter induced call in. Emails too numerous to list, suffice it to say topics include Quality, nutrition, style & running. After the tempo portion of the ride cool down as usual with Laurance. This leaves me wondering can a 4+ hour podcast jump the shark? What strange about this photo?
I interview John Murphy, member of the newly formed OUCH Pro Cycling Team presented by Maxxis. We talk about his career, the new team, Landis, etc. This interview will be part of our next full podcast.
