Christmas Gift Guide Podcast

Making a list and checking it twice, the 2 Johns have been extremely nice this year. Well, John G. is a bit cranky and anti-social sometimes, however, elven John K. and John G. put their pointy heads together and come up with a Christmas gift giving guide in the ranges of $10, $20, $50, $100, and $200+. Add your suggestions in the comments section and enjoy!

Should I ask for a cycling.tv membership? Some people love it, some people say it sucks…

    anyone have any insight?

  5. Brett in NH says:

I’ve had a cyclingtv membership for 2 years but don’t plan to renew. It’s a cool idea, but Jump TV falls down in delivering it.

    A) If you only have a mac, forget it. Player is not fully compatible w/Firefox or Safari. Can’t watch full screen. Works okay on a pc. Customer service/tech support is lip service only. The website, although improved, is not up to snuff.

    B) Trying to tune into the “live” broadcasts will have you tearing your hair out. Reminds me of trying to get online back in the AOL dial-up debacle days. If you do get in, the picture quality is often akin to watching a series of jerky postage stamps.

    C) It’s expensive. They’ve skillfully sliced up the coverage so you need to sign up for 3 premium quality subscriptions to watch what you are interested in (Giro/Vuelta/classics/mtb). I’m spending $130 this year.

    D) The on-demand coverage is great. The 20-minute race highlight packages are excellent. The announcing is good and it’s cool to be able to watch these classic races unfold here in the USA.

Again, it’s a great concept, but unfortunately the technological delivery of it by Jump TV leaves a lot to be desired right now.

  6. Petit-Breton says:

Did Versus show the Giro last year? I think I signed up for cycling.tv to see the Giro and it was worth it, but as Brett said, they slice it up and you have to keep paying and paying. I never went further than the Giro. I would like to see the CX coverage, but can’t part with the $$$$$….too expensive. Anybody know of other sites with cycling coverage?

Gotta go, my Lance twitter alarm just went off!

  7. Dave says:

You can usually watch the Giro for free online. Check this site for coverage updates: http://www.steephill.tv/giro-d-italia/

During the last Giro it had at least two links to sites that were streaming it for free.

Also the Tour of California was streamed live last year through their own site.

  8. Marc says:

there are a few options I know of to watch world cup level CX for free:
    1-http://ccx.nathanspear.com/ posts races for free
2- better quality (than #1) world cup races are posted on usenet after each race – (google ‘usenet search’ to locate files.)
3- you can watch Superprestige races for free live/streaming on http://www.vt4.be

The best gift I ever got was a powertap from my hubby last year. Along with my awesome coach my results improved two-fold. I browsed ebay everyday for 6 months before I found an awesome deal but I got the base model, open pro wheel for less than $600.

  13. Sarcastic Cyclist says:

“Is lance allowed to roll his arm warmers down like that?”

I don’t see any needle marks, so that is good news.

  18. James says:

I bought those Playmobil cycling sets for my son several years ago. Since then, I have been stealing them back one by one to display in my bike room. He never missed them, but he noticed the entire group on a table near my workbench the other day and took them all back. Now I have to start the process over again. Oh well, should have bought two sets to start with.
