-  Technology:  John G trims

All standard features in this edition.

As cool as a man with a moustache rivaling Burt Reynolds’ driving a black & gold Datsun, the podcast is back!

-I shipped a bike fed-ex ground last month for $38. It was insured for $3k and weighed right at 50lbs fully packed. It took 2 days for the 1000 mile journey. I’d recommend it.
    - I always enjoyed the “swag” and “schwag” musings of you two and thought you were just being goofs. Since you brought it up though, “Schwag” is slang for cheap, bad….marijuana

Great podcast guys. An idea popped into my head during the Specialized interview; what is the feasibility of soliciting some questions from the community to ask during such interviews? Of course that would largely depend on the logistics of how the interviews are setup but it could work of something like: post a blog a week/few days before the interview and the best comments get asked during it.

  4. john Says:

Ummm, are you saying that I didn’t ask very good questions? Granted, John K. is a better interviewer that I, but it wasn’t that bad.

  5. oakmad Says:

No not at all, I thought it was a great interview, with lots of great information coming out, better than John K’s even. It’s just an idea – its OK to say no. Its common with some sites to solicit questions from the community, http://interviews.slashdot.org/ as just one example.

  6. Sarcastic Cyclist Says:

the reason this podcast is so great is because it is from john and john…if questions came from us out here, this podcast would start to suck. I think both johns do really well in the interview department. Almost as good as Click an Clack.

  7. oakmad Says:

OK I’m not saying EVERY question needs to come from us – just a few and obviously they would have full power of veto

  8. john Says:

That’s not a bad idea. We are open to suggestions on questions or even topics, subjects & objects you might like to hear about. We will of course exercise our judgement on what we pursue.

  9. Ian Says:

Can I request that you guys do a podcast completely drunk off your butts?

  10. Fun Run Robbie Says:

    To the two johns:

HOCK AYE THE NOO simple means How are you doing
a simple greeting to make the race faces smile.

  11. Soul Rider Says:

Hi Guys – Has this not gone to iTunes yet? I’m too much of a novice to do it any other way. Thanks

  12. john Says:

Soul — it is up there and functioning…

  13. ecosse Says:

When you guys interview ‘He who shall not be named’ can you ask him his favorite colour? and What is his fav pizza topping?

  14. Dan Says:

    Johns

I just flew out to California on Delta last month. Price quoted to me to about 1 month in advance was $175 each way. I did a little research and found a website called shipbikes.com that ships via Fed Ex. The only catch is that you have to buy a specific box for $100. Shipping each way cost me $104.95 including $6,000 of insurance. It ended up being about the same as flying including the cost of the box but the box is good for more than one ship…the box is supposed to be good for 6 ships (they do sell the outer box for $30 when the one you have gets too beat up). Super simple to ship too. All you have to do is take off the handlebar and seatpost. Everything else can stay on the bike. My bike is a 63 and it fit in the box just fine.

  15. A Wife Says:

Yes, When I flew delta to the Tour o’ Georgia this year they dinged me $175 for my bike in the Trico case. Going out of Cinci the agent let me slide, but on the way back from Atlanta/Hartsfield I was charged the $175. My bike is small enough that I think I could remove my fork, cranks, and wheels then fit it into a “normal” hard sided suitcase. Maybe I can find something on sale after Christmas.

  16. James Says:

As Urbanhermit pointed out, schwag is a slang term for cheap marijuana, but that is not all it means. Actually the first definition that the urban dictionary gives for schwag as a noun is “Any free or extra goods, usually given to employees or workers.”

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=schwag

I have always heard it pronounced “schwag”, not “swag”, when referring to free goods, so I will stick by the former pronunciation. Besides, it reminds me of my days working as a bike mechanic many years ago. On that note, you probably wont find the terms “J.R.A.” or “bro discount” in the dictionary, but they are certainly terms that anyone has ever worked in a bike shop would be familiar with. If I am describing curtains or 1970’s lighting, I will gladly say swag, but when I am talking about free stuff, I’m definitely sticking with the term scchhhwag.

  17. john Says:

Yesssss!!!!!!! Thank you. I am vindicated. Schwag me out bro!

  18. Dave Says:

Yeah I have always heard it said as “schwag” as well.

  19. Sarcastic Cyclist Says:

Really bad when you give someone a bro discount and then they come back a few weeks later with a J.R.A. story and want it warrantied. My boss never was a fan of that.

  20. john Says:

“I was just riding along when my wheel started hitting the brakes.” Never mind the flatspotted rim and pinch flat. “Are you quite sure you didn’t hit a hole or something sir? No, no. I was just riding along.” That was always my favorite one.

Or the best one is the guy who returns a tube because it is “defective.” You take the tube out of the box, inflate, and observe the snakebite caused by the screwdriver or whatever he used to pry the bead back onto the rim. You show him how to do it correctly by putting a little air in the tube first, using hands and thumbs to roll back on, etc… Then he’s like – yeah, yeah, that’s the way I did it before. The tube was just defective.

  21. jg in pdx Says:

+ 1 on the schwag . . . I always thought “swag” was a “scientific wild ass guess.”

Haven’t had time to listen to the podcast, so sorry if that was mentioned . . .

  22. Cycleman South Africa Says:

Schwag too complicated I prefer Swag .Specialized interview was cool . -Chuffed you read my mail again . Going for a ‘Lekker’ long ride this afternoon.Going to change to red look cleats and see how they feel.

  23. OhioFarmer Says:

Schwag guys – if I am not mistaken is from the Rock n’ roll world. After concerts or shows, the band/crew would hand out “t-shirts” otherwise known as schwag to the hired production company doing lighting, sound, crew staff, if they did a good job that day. Needless to say, I have a few bags full of concert t-shirts. These days, bands don’t give them out anymore. They make so much money after paying the ‘house’ on schwag, they don’t want to give any of it away.

  24. Petit-Breton Says:

Great letter Sarcastic Cyclist! Can I make donation to your paypal account?

  25. Sarcastic Cyclist Says:

Donate to the Johns….it all comes from them.

  26. Petit-Breton Says:

I think they have been using my donations for antibotics…..whatever keeps the ‘casts coming!!

  27. WannabeKOM Says:
