here: China Todd, Cyclocross Magazine Editor/Founder Andrew Yee, Mitch our roving mechanic talks cyclocross wheels, and Jim Birrell, Race Director of the Tour of Missouri advises of good ways to view his race. Of course there are the usual segments of international scene with our Olympic hangover, local news, and as always a shed load of listener feedack provided by astute listeners (see photo above). There is also the lucky recipient of the feedback of the week- a pair of Slipstream overshoes from our friends at Defeet. So download or stream from the blog or itunes and fold laundry or ride your bike or drive or cook dinner or turn down the lights & snuggle up with your honey on the couch… or do whatever you do while listening & enjoy.

As for what we’re doing whilst listening, you hit it spot on: pretending to work. I also might add in my striped socks I am so known for: http://www.paulsmith.co.uk/us/socks-265/mens-sock-a8xa-800e-f08-e/product.html?LproductId=5497
Regarding the assos preference that you guys have, have you read fatcyclist’s open letter to assos? You should, I’d love to hear your thoughts: http://www.fatcyclist.com/2006/09/29/an-open-letter-to-assos/

It has pictures from Beijing with clipless pedals easily spotted in the photos. They are like the Shimano DX pedals of old that have a spd pedal with a cage around it.
Re: BMX.
1. Kyle Bennett. He wasn’t the world champ. That was Strombergs. Bennett was looking quite strong until the crash.
2. The number plates are just a remnant of early days and the inspiration from motocross.
3. Anne Caroline-Chaussen was definitely wearing clipless pedals and she looked like she was wearing yellow Sidis.
4. In general re: aerodynamics in BMX: given the jumps and the turns and the short nature of the race, it wouldn’t be worthwhile to spend a whole lot of work on aero stuff. It’s all over in 35 seconds.
Ron,
Thanks for the BMX info! Definitely an area where we need support from outside sources.

But even if the events are short I still think they could benefit from aero equipment. Look at the match sprinters on the track. That race is essentially the last of 3 laps, over in way less than 35 secs and they use aero stuff.

Anyone who has lost a timed event by 1/10ths of a second will kick themselves for ignoring aerodynamics. Bring on the Tomac skin suit!
Flying 200 times (1 lap on some tracks, at maximum speed) are around 13-14 seconds for flying bricks like me. I wear a skin suit, worked on a lower position, and have considered taping helmet vents. CdA matters. A good site for discussions on aerodynamics and bikes is biketechreview.com if you have some reading time to invest.
I wear my clipless and a skin suit while MTBing in rural Virginia. I get some weird looks but my BF likes it.

Heh, are the BMX’ers going 70 kph?

I really like the cyclocross magazine interview. I may try a cross’ race this year on a hard tail MTB for starters. What is your .02 cents on cross bikes with single Vs double chain rings? I always thought the single front rings were classy and should be enough for a cross course with a 9X rear.
Soul Rider – Thanks. The mag is very good. Not pretentious, lots of content from trenches, good tech stuff… I personally prefer the single ring with outside chain guard and inside chain “watcher” so it does not bounce off. It’s lighter – less chain, no front mech, less cableage, cleaner, less to go wrong. I see it more and more in the states, no so much on the Euro bikes.
I was just googling that mag and came across a small banner for Lynskey, they have their ti stock geometry cross frames marked down $500 to $1495. Not a bad price for a nice handbuilt ti frame.
Your are a first timer for cross, correct? $1,495 seems like a big chunk of change to drop on a frame alone. I was very well satisfied with a cannondale optimo frame I rode a few seasons back. Aluminum with a carbon fork. I think the frame cost me $350 wholesale, so about $600 – $700 retail. Why not drop the dime on a decent redline, specialized or some such complete bike for your firs season. If you are itchin’ to spend some bucks, invest in some nice carbo tubies.

I agree with John G. You actually can have some fun and pickup something like a Surly, Planet X, Soma frame, or some old Bridgestone. They are inexpensive and fun to dial in the just way you want. Plus the peeps ALWAYS ask about them. Cross is great for thinking outside the norm and showing some personal style while racing or crashing your brains out.
Oh – I wouldn’t/wasn’t considering the Lynskey for myself. Just saw that and thought I would pass along. I like Soma, Salsa, Kona, etc maybe a Redline.. but I doubt I get anything this year. If I were going to spend a little more I sure do like the Soulcraft Groundskeeper, also SyCip frames. Rode along with a guy recently that had a Soma Double Cross with S&S Couplers that was his travel bike, sure was nice looking with nice parts.
Dude That Soulcraft is SWEEEEEEET! Cross bikes are great all rounders. Heck, I mountain bike with mine and I already have a great hard tail bike. No judgement from me on the Lynskey. This is an idiom where you truly enjoy the bike or race culture in a different light than the road or mountain scene. It seems to be about just getting your self out there regardless of your ride. Also as always mud just plain fun.
Hey Guys. Does anyone have a carbon road front that shudders when you apply the brake? And If so, What is going on and how do you make it go away? Thanks.
Tyler and his unborn twin win the stars and stripes. Now Michael Ball will never go away.
Nice call on the Bruno emailer name. You called him Ace. In fact, Bruno’s team is ACE Asphalt! Haven’t seen the Belgium hammer since early season, but then again I haven’t been racing much. I, however, usually do see him on some of the rides and I haven’t seen him this summer.

JK, Check this out. I was in shop in Michigan and all the Colnago’s With wing top bars were taped like. Look at it close. I spent some time trying to figure it out. What is your take? http://www.colnago.com/ENGLISH.html Pic no# 2
It looks like they started at the top of the bar and ended at the bottom. Hmmmm- looks good. As you know, I am an advocate of stopping short- when wrapping wing shaped bars. I am not really a fan of wrapping top to bottom though. It looks clean and gets rid of the need for finishing tape; however, ending the tape at the bottom of the bars with the tape folding into the end requires the plug to always be in place. Sometimes the plug gets forced out and then you have an unravelling bar tape mess.

Should we be happy to see Tyler win? I can’t decide.
Of course we should be happy. Tyler never did anything wrong. He was framed by the same aliens that helped build the pyramids.
Had he ‘fessed up, I could be happy for him and happy with the result. Yeah, he paid his time but it’s pretty hollow when you continue to protest your innocence throughout your suspension. Does anyone believe him? (Aside from the pyramid builders)
Probably doesn’t help him being a Rockster either. Now we’ll never be rid of Big Daddy Ball.
Hey – What was the name of the other podcast (Not Fredcast) that the 2Js referenced on this most recent episode? I’m always looking for new ones, though I will never leave the 2jPC !
I think Tyler’s win was pretty manly and I say good for him. Sounds like a brutal race and not many were left at the end and those that were left were all marking Hincapie. Tyler took the initiative and drove it when Lewis wouldn’t pull. What does it say about the Garmin boys who had the numbers but didn’t come up with the W? I am betting they are not too happy. I’ll also wager that USA Cycling is not too happy either.
You’re right, it was a gutsy ride. I will give him that.
Soul Rider, I think the other podcast was the competitors radio show. here’s the address: http://www.competitorradio.com/
What other results has Rock Racing had this year? All that comes to mind is Bahati’s win at Downers. There were a few other minor races with Sevilla too, I think.
I think Ball will go away. It might take another season or two, but he’ll be gone soon enough.
It’s cyclocross season! New interview with Cyclocross Magazine Publisher Andrew Yee posted at http://www.cxhairs.com. Update to the chat the Two Johns did last August. Great grassroots success story. You can read it here.
