MP3 file of podcast: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (443)In this podcast we pick up the ball where it was dropped last week with lots of listener feedback, how a frenchman might win the tour, not sandbagging, and last but not least, something very dear to both Johns, how to wrap handlebar tape. While we agree to disagree on one of the finer points, we do agree that it needs to be paid attention to and is the finishing touch to a bike build.
These photos illustrate the end conditions of bar tape. The bar tape is cut at a bias to have a crisp edge at the ends of the bar, bottom where you start the tape & at the top near the bulge of the bar. This makes for a clean, consistent thickness of bar tape, no bulges.

Come on now guys – so anybody who performs well is a doper? Griffey’s numbers haven’t been amazing in a very long time (as opposed to Bonds/Giambi/etc) and yes, he’s been playing in the majors since he was 19. Griffey has averaged 30 home runs for 20 seasons…how crazy is that? Sounds pretty reasonable to me…

To compare = Hank Aaron averaged 33 over 23 seasons. He, like Griffey, didn’t always lead the league in HRs, but his generally consistent output and long career led to some amazing stats. If Griffey can have solid output for 3 more season, he’ll hit the 3000 hit mark too…

Jim,
We can only hope. Has anybody recorded data points on Griff’s helmet size? I bet it hasn’t changed.

How about when ball players speak openly, which Griffey Junior has, about cortisone injections? Cortisone is a corticosteroid. Pitchers use it to rehab an arm, Griff’ has used it on his tender knees. I’ve often wondered why this is overlooked, if not accepted. I guess it is not on the MLB banned substance list.

Johns,
Apparently my babelfish French skills failed me!
“Blesser Comme Un Champion” was intended to read “Hurtin’ like a Champ”. I heard that during someone’s commentary on mountian stage of Le Tour. It was like: “Look at the face on Cadel Evans, hanging in there, hurting like a champ”. Oh well maybe I’ll foist a different poorly translated name on you next time. I promise no recumbent bashing.
And no, the unicycle guys were doing the 8, 16 or 25mile options, not the entire “METRIC CENTURY”. Still, 25 miles of spastic convulsions has to be rough on you.

JK-Aren’t we in a situation you hoped to avoid by having the UCI’s pro tour? Since the podcast all heck has broken loose. But, Boonen hasn’t committed a violation, thus no suspension from the UCI, yet the Tour of Switzerland and TDF have banned him from their races. The TDF isn’t part of the pro tour but the Tour of Switzerland is. Should the UCI demand that Boonen be included in the Tour of Switzerland?

I liked you .02 on race radios, interesting stuff.

Left-hand bar = counter-clockwise; Right-hand bar = clockwise. Anything else is offensive.

I’m with John G on the tape direction, but did see a tutorial from NYVC (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhdEsTbEPkI) that sided with John K. You’re the first I’ve heard suggest aligning the tape at the barends. I tried that last week and it is a clean look. I was surprised that you both use the two tabs over the back of of the brake hoods. I thought PRO way to do it is to discard the tabs and use an ‘X’ pattern over the back. I can see the advantage of your method though to avoid bunching the tape.
I enjoyed the suggestions on increasing endurance. I made the mistake of following Fredcast on Twitter for a short time. Equally as tiresome as the audio feed.
