Dear “Bro DIrt,” I have been on a trip almost exactly like your upcoming one to Italy, but as ‘the wife.’ No in-laws, but me, the cycling husband, his bike, and our 6 and 8 year old kids for 3 weeks, moving by plane, mostly train, and some car. A few words of advice:
1. The kids are big enough to pull their own bag and carry a back pack. Spend a few bucks on good luggage for them and if it doesn’t fit in their size bag, you are taking too much.
2. Don’t EVER ask your wife to haul/help/watch the bike in any way. Chances are she resents it being on the trip enough already.
3. The only way you should even broach the subject of a 2nd sports car is if you offer for your wife to be the one to drive it while you drive the kids and bike.
4. Every once in a while, pick up the camera and take a photo of your lovely wife with her family!
5. Offer the wife an equal amount of free time per day that you spend away alone on the bike. (Do the math…not enough hours in the day to do that……Hmmmmmm??)
This all assumes that your better half is not riding on this trip…yes?
6. Have a blast! It will be a GREAT trip.

Thanks for the discussion on frame material. I’m definitely not “stuck” on riding titanium, just curious about your opinions. And I personally wouldn’t shell out the bux for a Seven (or anything else in that price range), because price:ride quality is definitely an important factor. Never cared much for aluminum, though.
Sage advice from the Wife above. And Christian Slater? C’mon, guys . . . that guy was washed up after “Gleaming the Cube.”
Happy Holidays to you and your families, JG and JK.

I think the Florida Flash needs to spend some time with the Rasta. Perhaps some relaxation exercises. I will attempt to respond in a way that will bring healing and closure to this difficult situation. Pray for me Rasta.

bill, thanks for the mention. i have been listening with zen like concentration but not writing in for a few reasons…. i notice the john’s have been ripppin’ on alot of letters, most unncessarily. .. i have a few comments. god i am glad i ride a triangle frame. ha.
back in september when i first started writing in, i was the flavour of the month. the john’s put me up against the nice cop for an all out letter writing battle. i won the letter of the week. me, as well as a few other regulars were asked to write letters to the johns to raise the bar in an all out writing competition.. then after too many letters on the battle royal, they decide to flip on the concept and wonder why they are getting so many letters about other listeners. they ask us to only ask questins to them. the john’s did in fact ask for it. in all my letters i still did in fact asks some good questions, usually they got missed because of my smack down’s. ha.
i sent a letter that they didn’t read, it wasn’t fully a commentary, i was discussing my new sram force, as well as dressing properly for winter. i’m guessing the rasta positivity is old news.
my comments for the johns… the rasta is still spreading the positivity, i’m training for the upcoming race season, and i just bought my wife a road bike because i miss her when i ride…. please don’t forget that without your listeners, and the letters, the podcast would be missing alot.
i’m sure you are noticing that some regulars haven’t been writing in. it wasn’t only me noticing that the johns were being a bit crusty on the podcast from the beginning of the month. we know it’s the off season, so when there is not much local or international scene to cover, your listener feedback is what we listeners wait for.
try not to cut your listeners off at the knees. we like you guys. your last podcast was good, the one before that left me with a bad taste. it’s like you 2 are pissed or something… try not to take it out on listeners.
the rolling rasta.

Rasta, thanks for the feedback. We love the play between our listeners, but have yet to figure out a way to retain that and not have 2 hour+ podcasts. I realize that much of the interest of the podcast is listener generated so we are trying to use the blog as another forum. Bear with us as the podcast/blog continue to evolve. We are working on bringing in a couple other elements to make it more interesting in the future. Keep the positive vibe and have a good Boxing Day!

Hey John. You said that you are looking to do a trip soon where you want to box your bike and fly free of charge(bike). I did a similar thing a few years back. I did what you you described for the wheels and for the frame I cut the box to open pizza style. it helped with the packing and layout. The fork came off and between the seat stays and handle bar was front of the down tube. Then I covered EVERY tube with foam pipe insulation (cheap). My rear derailleur was still attached cablewise, But was placed in bag and taped between the stays. I put my cycle clothing, packing tape(for the trip home) and a folded duffle bag in the box as well. I gave the airline two regulation sized boxes and walked on the plane carefree and no pay out to them. Good Luck on your Trip.
Ps. The longer Podcast gel better than the short ones. Just think of it like good ride. It takes time to warm up and then hit stride.
Take it easy , Ritchey boy

Rasta — Keep the positive flow. We need the likes of you. Seriously, if everyone was as skilled and entertaining as you with their emails, we would not have had to make the “questions only” rule.
Yes, I did have my knickers in a bunch a few podcasts ago. I do get this way, especially at the onset of the cold riding season. I’m off to Florida next week for some warm weather training, a race, and some hot tubing with finely crafted Belgian Ale in hand. Maybe that will do the trick.
The other John is coming to Cincinnati tomorrow. We’ll see about the doing something for the end-of-year email contest.
Keep listening… and writing.

johns. it means everything that you took the time to comment back.
i’m a loyal fan.

happy holidays.

Rasta,
Don’t take the TJ blow offs personally. You are not the only one whose prose sometimes fails to see the airways. I’m not as gifted with the gab as you, and I’m definitely crustier…although living in the desert is a HUGE plus at this time of year. By the way, I also gifted a bike to my loved one and she has already been hitting the road…although she is not game to ride with me unless the kids are in tow.
Feeling the heat,
Dog

I’m looking for a combined unit which does heartrate, cadence, distance, time as simply as possible, any ideas? I have a polar and a flight deck which work pretty well, but I just got a sweet new bike and I am ready for an upgrade.
Anyone interested in a new 57 Sarthe 08 lemond steel frame and fork.
Happy holidays

I’ve got a Polar CS200CAD. I like it except that it doesn’t work on the rear wheel so I mount a second computer for the trainer. You can get it for around $120. There may be cheaper options.

Been turned onto you for the past several weeks (yowza!) Digging the podcasts including those over 61 minutes during my ho hum gym workouts.
John, I’m not worried about your attitude shift, but you HAVE been a bit “pissy” and it’s completely expected for this time of year. After training around you adrenaline junkies for a few years, you all seem to get your Assos in a bunch about this time of year. Ask your mama or your best girl..they’re all used to it by now..it too will pass
When I awoke this morning with you TWO on my mind…I knew the time had arrived…..to write. My waking moments, just before I reentered the icy winter wonderland of Utah included wrapping my brain around all you can do with used bike tubes and the fact that Utah was skipped for the new UCI America Tour. We’re ready to be placed on the map!
Yes, patching tubes is oh so reasonable (have you seen the prices go up and up?) However, as a former collegiate volleyball player gone mom of two and occasional pain cave venturer with the rest of you; I recalled using the bike tube as resistance around the waist for plyometric partner training. That got me to thinking of other uses. Now that I’ve discovered that if I don’t stretch, I don’t stay out of injuries, the tube is excellent for stretching those hamstrings and calves (and they don’t break like those flimsy colored things you can buy) and somehow, I don’t miss my bike SO much (lows are around 6 degrees and highs right around 16). Lie on your back, tie the tube in an 8-10″ circumfrence and slide them up to your knees. Lie on your back and push out until it BURNS. REST. REPEAT. Stand an do the same around ankles. Excellent for stabilizers.
So here’s my question, give us some creative ways to go “green” and recycle those tubes in a functional or not so functional way
Ciao from Ogden,Utah… “Greatest Snow on Earth” and home of the Xterra WINTER Championships March 2008 :)http://www.xterraplanet.com/races/dsp_content.cfm?id=1836 and letting the Tour of America http://thetourofamerica.com/ cruise thru Colorado on it’s way to Interbike…for now.
